CULTURAL NEWS Saturday, August 18, 2007 KOFORIDUA HOSTS NATIONAL FESTIVAL OF ARTS THE tenth Basic Schools National Festival of Arts is to take place in Koforidua, in the Eastern Region from Monday, August 20 to August 23. The festival which has the theme “Culture, A tool For Peaceful Co-Existence” is to be opened by the Minister of Education, Science and sports, *Professor Dominic Fobih. All the 10 regions of Ghana are expected to participate in the three-day festival in six disciplines. These are: choral music, sight seeing, poetry recitals, drum language, dance and vocational skills. There will be a special session for story-telling and drama performance in the evenings. These will be on non completive basis. Certificates of honour will be presented to regions which excel in the various disciplines and overall champion certificate will be presented to the region that comes first in the whole competition. As part of the activities marking the festival, an excursion will be undertaken by all participants in the festival on August 24 to interesting tourists’ spots in the Eastern Region such as the Boti Water Falls, the Adomi Bridge etc. The aim of the festival is to offer the opportunity for the youth to learn about the various Ghanaian cultural practices and values, and to share common ideas that cut across the 10 regions of Ghana in the context of Ghanaian Arts and Culture. Above all, to foster unity, love, peace, nationalism and national character which are the essential attributes and pre-requisites to a nation’s destiny on her path of aspirations for development. It is being organized by the cultural unit of the Ghana Education Service. The National Co-ordinator of Culture for the Ghana Education Service, Freeman Aguri, told Times Weekend* that he has the hope that the standard of performance in the six competitive disciplines will be very high this year. He said the cultural unit in collaboration with all the Regional Cultural Co-ordinators have worked so hard to ensure that pupils are well groomed to be able to show practically on stage live of the theoretical lessons they had been taught in the classroom by their teachers. *Source: TIME WEEKEND - Saturday, August 18, 2007 Page: 13
