Effutu Celebrate Aboakyer

  From: DAVID YARBOI-TETTEH, Winneba

The chiefs and people of Effutu Traditional Area in the Effutu-Awutu-Senya District of the Central Region at the weekend celebrated their annual Abokyer festival amidst heavy security presence.

“Aboakyer” meaning hunting for deer is celebrated on the first Saturday in May in every year and is also known for its tourist attraction.

The festival started with a marathon on April 28, and ended with a boxing night on Sunday, with other activities such as a church service, sanitation day, regatta and tug-of-war, football gala and a state dance.

Dubbed “Golden Jubilee Aboakyer durbar” a large number of people gather at the durbar grounds to welcome the catching of the deer.

*Tuafo Number Two with the Deer

The Dentsifo, Number Two Asafo Company refused to go into the forest to hunt for the deer, as tradition demands alongside the Tuafo, the Number One Asafo Company.

A few Dentsifo however managed to accompany the Number One Asafo Company in order to add colour to the festival which was graced by President J.A. Kufour.

At exactly 9.21 am, the Tuafo Number One Asafo returned to the durbar grounds with the deer.

The deer was presented to the Omanhene of the Effutu Traditional Area, Neenyi Ghartey VII, who stepped on it to signify its acceptance.

The guest of honour was President Kufour who called on the people not to allow disputes; politics and misunderstanding destroy the celebration of the Aboakyer Festival.

“Aboakyer is one of the acclaimed festivals attracting people from across the globe and must be celebrated with joy”, he added.

This festival is celebrated by the people of Simpa or Winneba in the Central Region of Ghana.

The festival is a celebration to mark the migration of these people from the ancient Western Sudan Empire where they were led by two brothers and a god called Otu. Upon consulting their god, they were instructed by their traditional priest or mediator between the people and the god to sacrifice a young member of the Royal family every year to their god.

This was not good news so they made an appeal to their god who asked for an animal from the wild cat family to be caught alive and beheaded before the god.

Before the festival began they settled the god at a place called Penkyi hence the god became Penkyi Out. When the people went out to hunt down the wild cat they lost so many men before capturing it alive. This caused the second appeal. Penkyi Out decided to accept a mature bush buck which looks like a deer.

The people of Simpa sang this story in their war chants and told it during moonlit nights. It was kept and protected till it could be written in English for all to read.

Today, the Aboakyer festival is celebrated in May each year and is a major event in Ghana.
