Chiefs, people of Adabraka launch project

 Story:   BERYL ADDO

THE Chiefs and people of Adabraka Odawna-Official Town Electoral Area have held a durbar to launch sanitation projects and a clean up exercise to improve sanitation in the area.

Speaking at the durbar, the Assembly member of Adabraka Official Town Area, Mr. Edmund Quartey, said the sanitation situation in the area was assuming an alarming proportion hence the need to take proactive measures to address it.

He said some residents had resorted to dumping refuse indiscriminately in the area even into drains, creating filthy environments instead of making use of the containers provided by the assembly.

Mr. Quartey said there were seven units under his electoral area and plans were underway to organize massive clean-up exercises in each unit every month.

He said apart from tackling the issue of sanitation, they also intended to provide street lights and rehabilitate drains in the area.

He said a number of roads in the area were without street lights and that had created visibility and security problems not only for motorists but for residents in the area. He said the problem had also offered criminals a field day to operate under the cover of darkness.

According to the assembly member, the only place of convenience in the area needed rehabilitation and called for the formation of youth clubs to plan towards the development of Adabraka community as well as the provision of a permanent office for assembly members in the area to ensure efficient administration.

Mr. Quartey said despite these problems, the local authority was bent on instituting measures to solve some of the problems to improve on sanitary conditions in the area.

Speaking on behalf of the Member of Parliament for Osu Clottey Constituency, Mr. Adu Mantey, the Assembly member for Asylum Down, Mr. Ebo Mensah, said an assembly member was required to organize the people for development to organize the people for development to improve the living standards of the local communities.

He, however, pointed out that the objective could not be achieved without the support of the people in the area, adding that “Society had a responsibility to continue the attainment of that objective”.

He reminded the people that ensuring a good and healthy environment was not to the sole responsibility of the assembly member, but all residents needed to adopt a positive attitude to ensure that the environment was clean.

On local revenue generation, Mr. Mensah said the assemblies did not generate enough revenue, and therefore relied on contributions from the District Assemblies’ Common Fund for the executive of projects.

He lauded the local street light project and urged the people not to relent in their efforts to complete the projects.

The Adabraka Mantse, Nii Tetteh Adjabeng I, who chaired the programme commended the assembly member for Adabraka Odawna Official Town for his initiative and called on residents in the area to mobilize the needed support for the projects.
