Highlights of the 40th J. B. Danquah Memorial Lectures Series

While the forthcoming Golden Jubilee Year J. B. Danquah Memorial Lecture series does not specifically focus attention on the life and times of Dr. J. B. Danquah, even so, come 19 to 21 March 2007, Professor S. K. B. Asante , an International Consultant and a former United Nations Principal Regional Adviser, will mount the rostrum for three days at the British Council Hall, Accra to give a highly intellectual and distinguished presentation of “Ghana and the Promotion of Pan-Africanism and Regionalism”, the 40th in the series of the Academy’s J. B. Danquah Memorial Lectures. The series, based mostly on primary sources, will refreshingly highlight the following:

The immense contributions of J. B. Danquah and other stalwart and articulate nationalists of the 1920s and the 1930s to the advancement of the Promised Land of self-government and independence struggle of the 1940s and early 1950s;

The tremendous contributions of Ghana, under the inspired leadership of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, towards first, the emancipation of the dependent territories of Africa and second, the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), in May 1963, leading eventually to the inauguration of the African Union in Durban City of South Africa in July 2002;

Ghana and the opportunities and challenges posed by
(a)   Pan-Africanism on regional basis in West African with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) as a case study,
(b)    Diaspora Pan-Africanism focusing on the pilgrimage of the Black Diaspora to Ghana culminating in the launch of a “Joseph Project” recognising the Biblical Joseph who triumphed after being enslaved and united with his brothers), and
(c)    Ghana’s pioneering role in the current post-Cold War or post –apartheid new wave of Pan-Africanism, the wave of African renaissance, as reflected in the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM).

The lecture is on the following sub-topics:

Day 1
“Ghana in Search of Pan-Africanism and Regionalism: A Historical Overview”

Day 2
“Ghana: An Advocate of Pan-Africanism as an integrative Force and as a Movement of Liberation”

Day 3

Nkrumah- Africa's greatest son
Thirty seven years ago in far away Bucharet in Romania, death laid its icy hand on Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah-Africa’s greatest statesman. I choose to call him a real statesman because he was really selfless and honest to his country. He actually placed Ghana first, Africa second and himself last. I call him a statesman again because “A statesman thinks of his country and even the interests and aspirations of her future generations....more
