By: Timothy Gobah
The Vice —President, Mr. John Mahama, yesterday announced hat the government was to set up a committee to plot out the technical details for the creation of another region out of the recurrent Northern Region.
Receiving a delegation of the Northern Regional House of Chiefs at the Castle, Osu, Mr. Mahama said the committee was to iron out the grey in the recommendations earlier presented by the house for creation of a region out of the existing Northern Region.
The chiefs were at the Castle to present a resolution on the creation of the new region.
Over the past decade, there have been calls, for the creation of a region out of the vast stretch of the Northern Region which extends from the country’s boarder with Togo in the east to that of Cote d’iovire in the west.
It is the view of the chiefs and the people of the region, as well as others concerned with matters of governance that splitting the region into two will make for more effective administration and development.
Receiving the delegation, the Vice President said, after the government had been inaugurated in January 2009; its attention was drawn to a petition by the President of the Northern Regional House of Chiefs, Yagbon-Wura Bawa Doshie by Adudu I, for the creation of a new region out of the present Northern Region.
He said after the consultations, President Atta Mills had referred the matter to the house for further consultations for the members to build consensus on the grey areas in their request for the creation of another region.
“I am very happy that you are able to deliberate on the matter and have passed resolutions on it,” Mr. Mahama said.
“I have taken note of your proposal for us to set up a technical committee to iron out the grey areas. This we will do, he stressed.
The chiefs and the elders of the Gonja Traditional Council, in March 2003, took a bold step to petition former President Kufuor to curve a new region out of the existing Northern Region.
On assumption of office, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Government, recognized the laudable intention underpinning the request, referred the matter to the Northern Regional House of Chiefs in June 2009 to build consensus so that the demand will not be perceived as coming from one particular ethnic group
The Leader of the delegation, Wulugu Naba Na Prof J .S Nabila, said pursuant to the objective, the matter had been tabled at the Northern Regional House of Chiefs at its general meeting held in Tamale in October 1, 2009.
After an exhaustive discussion of the subject, Professor Nabila said, the house had unanimously resolve that the request to create a new region out of the Northern Region was a good one that would ensure grass root participation in governance and more equitable distribution of national resources.
The house, he said, also recognizing the importance of the creation of a new region, identified that the modalities setting out the parameters for creating the new region were very crucial.
