ASANTEHENE STOPS QUEEN MOTHER’S DESTOOLMENT FROM KINGSLEY E. HOPE, KUMASI THE Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has asked the paramount chief of Duayaw Nkwanta, in the Brong Ahafo Region, Nana Boakye Tromo III, to rescind the decision to destool the queen mother of the paramountcy, Nana Mfodwaa Birago. An emissary from the Manhyia Palace, Nana Poku, was delegated to deliver the message to Nana Boakye Tromo III, last Wednesday. He was accompanied by the Abusuapanin, Nana Appiahene and Okyeame Asamoah of Duayaw Nkwanta. About a month ago, the paramount chief was said to have announced the destoolment of the queen mother in an attempt to enstool his grand daughter, Feilcia Serwaa, as the new queen mother. Sources close to Manhyia Palace told the *Times* here that the message was premised on the fact that the paramount chief had no right to destool the queen mother who is the traditional wife of the Golden Stool, without recourse to the Manhyia Palace. According to the source, the Asantehene noted that charges should have preferred against the queen mother and sanctioned, before she could be destooled. Manhyia’s intervention followed petition filed by Nana Birago at the Brong-Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs, Serwaa and Koto Asamoah, linguist of the Duayaw Nkwanta traditional council, are accused of making attempts to replace her. According to the petitioner, she had since December 18, 2006, when she was enstooled, played her role as the queen mother effectively without question and she was known to be the substantive queen mother of the traditional area as there had been no case against her. She prayed the Judicial Committee for a declaration that the Paramount Chief and linguist had no right to enstool Serwaa as the queen mother against the fact she was the substantive occupant of the queen mother’s stool. As a result, she had called for an order of perpetual injunction, restraining the respondents from carrying out their intentions of replacing her. Besides, the petition, she prayed the Judicial Committee for an order to compel the paramount chief to account for the total amount received from the Administrator of Stool lands for and on behalf of the traditional council. This, according to the petition, followed that since 2007, the paramount chief had refused to account for the sale of building plots and monies received from the Administrator of Stool Lands. Traditionally, the queen mother is a wife to the Golden Stool. And as, such, the queen mother, herself informed the Asantehene of the developments in Duayaw Nkwanta.
