Trust gears for heritage conservation

By: FRANCIS XAH

THE formal launch of the 10th anniversary programme and fund-raising project of the Ghana Heritage Conservation Trust (GHCT) took place in Accra on Monday.

The GHCT is a non-governmental, non-profit organization set up in 1996 to promote the preservation and conservation of Ghana’s historic monuments and sites.

Mr. Stephen, Asamoah Boateng, Minister of Tourism and Diasporan Relations, who performed the launch, said the GHCT was established to promote the combination of historical and natural resource conservation for socio-economic development.

He underscored the important role tourism played in national development, saying that, for tourism to thrive, the country’s heritage sites must be well conserved.

He was concerned that most heritage sites continue to deteriorate as a result of neglect.

Earlier in her address, Dr. Esi Sutherland-Addy, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of GHCT, said the main objective of GHCT is to stabilize, protect, conserve and maintain the historic physical structures and resources around designated areas.

Dr. Esi Sutherland-Addy said GHCT has among others, re-roofed Elmina Castle Service Yard, developed Assin Mesomagor into a community tourism destination, constructed classroom blacks for Tweapease community in Twifo Hemang in the Lower Denkyira District, and Ato Austin Memorial Garden in Cape Coast.

Others, she said, are the transformation of canopy walkways and visitor centres into a viable self-sustaining eco-friendly ventures and the regular support to the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission as a contribution to the protection and management of the Kakum Conservation Area.

She said the initial endowment fund of a million US dollars given to GHCT by USAID needed to be enhanced hence the fund-raising.

Dr. Kenneth Brown, former US Ambassador to Ghana, and president of the Association for diplomatic Studies and Training in Washington DC, said friends of Ghana Heritage in the US have been supporting the GHCT.

He disclosed that, donations to GHCT by US citizens through friends of Ghana Heritage, are tax deductible from US tax-papers.

He gave the assurance that, the US would continue to assist GHCT to enable it to perform its heritage conservation works more effectively.
