| African film-makers to show their best in Accra |    | | 24/05/2008 | Page 1 of 1 | | | AFRICAN FILM-MAKERS TO SHOW THEIR BEST IN ACCRA

Thirty-four film-makers from Africa and Accra from May 31 to June 6 to showcase the best of their documentary films, free of charge.
In all, 52 films are to be shown at four venues namely the Kama Conference Center, the Goethe Institute, Alliance Francaise and the National Film and Television Institute NAFTI where some short programmes will be held.
Put together by the West African Documentary Forum, the real life Pan-African Documentary Festival, which is in it third year, seek to empower Africans to tell their story from the African perspective using film.
According to the organizers, the forum chose Ghana to host the annual festival because the country plays an important role in the history of Africa by being one of the earliest to gain independence as well playing an important role in the slavery in Africa.
The film-makers will be coming from countries such as Sudan, Nigeria, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mali, South Africa, Cameroon, Tanzania, Ghana, the United States of America and Europe.
Among some of the exciting films to be shown are “Banished’ from the USA”, “lost children of Africa” from Sudan, “This is my Africa” from England and “Drum” from South Africa.
The films will be shown at Alliance Francaise in Kumasi from June 9 to June 11 while in January next year, they will be shown in Khartoum, Sudan.
The festival since its inception has over the past two years carved a unique image for itself by deepening cross cultural and intercontinental exchanges between professional film makers, and between students from film school in the continent.
Briefing the Times Weekend on the festival in Accra, a co-producer and a director of the festival, Awam Amkpa said for a long time, Africans have been treated as mere objects as the stories of Africa are told by outsiders.
Be believed that it is important to stay focused and tell our own story and this festival seeks to do exactly that, he said.
He said the film has three tiers which are to bring together Africans and bring them the opportunity to explore their culture and history and to show that Africans can advocate for themselves, encourage young Africans film makers in the diaspora to contribute towards the objective.
Mr. Amkpa said the festival, which will also involve workshops, will ensure that technology is transferred to amateurs in the film industry.
“We want to focus on high school children by creating visual literary programming for them to see these images and interpret them for educational purposes. By this, he said they will be encouraging the new generation to make their own films.
“Books are good but not enough because it is important to put this knowledge into films”, he emphasized. Asked what is the difference between the festival and the others in the continent such as the FESPACO in Burkina Faso, Mr. Amkpa explained that the major difference is the fact that unlike the latter which commercial, the real life film documentary has no commercial orientation.
“This festival emphasizes on educational and cultural issues and this is testified by the fact that all the films are going to be shown free of charge and all the awards are sponsored by people and organizations who believe in our vision,” he stated.
He described the previous two as good and better but said this year’s will be better organized than the two. “One major problem we faced in the previous festivals was issue of venues that is why for this year, we have acquired the Kama Conference Center where almost all the films will be shown as it is spacious enough,” he assured. He said the workshops will come in two forms, being the digitized achieving the workshop where students will be introduced to a new technology in the film making and the documentary and new media to put up by a US-based organization, the National Black Programming Consortium.
He discounted claims that documentary film making is very expensive. “With the era of digital cameras, many Africans who have basic education can make their own films at a
cost much cheaper,” he noted.
