THE FINAL AKWASIDAE FOR 2009

The chiefs and people of Asanteman on Monday, observed the final ‘Akwasidae’, for 2009 with pageantry that highlighted the rich culture of the Ashantis.
Akwasidae, which marks the last 40 days on the calendar of Asanteman, is celebrated nine times in a year to commemorate the great feats chalked by their ancestors, with the aim of emulating those success, It also doubles as a memorial occasion for their forebears.
The ceremony which took place at the forecourt of the Manhyia palace, saw in attendance, Mr. John Mahama who received a rapturous welcome upon arrival in the durbar grounds with his entourage. It was also attended by former President J.A Kufour, Ministers of State, Members of Parliament, the diplomatic community and the clergy and the cream of Asante society.
On his arrival, Mr. Mahama proceeded to exchange greetings with the Asantehene, Otumfo Osei-Tutu II and other chiefs of the Asanteman, a gesture which was reciprocated by the Ashanti King and his entourage.
The ceremony itself was characterized by drumming and dancing and the playing of the ‘atenteben’ flutes and a rendition of appellations.
Otumfo Osei-Tutu, resplendent in his kente and glittering golden regalia, rode in a palanquin to acknowledge cheers and greetings from his subjects. The divisional chiefs and other chiefs of Asanteman later came to pay homage.
